Two days of glorious weather was matched by two days of glorious bowling, as Javea Green Bowls Club enjoyed their Championship Finals. Often people say that the standards are poorer in the Finals than the semi-finals, but this year that was certainly not the case. I cannot cover every match in detail but pride of place must go to Diane Wynne who, after being runner-up on three previous occasions, finally lifted the Ladies Singles Trophy beating Chris Evans. The Gents Singles went to Alan Phillips defeating Greg Sperring and the Mixed Singles to Nick Cole against a “gutsy” John Pittaway. Another special mention for our Novices, less than two years bowling experience, who both performed well and showed that the future looks bright, Peter Shaw overcame Steve Lilley. The Veterans Trophy was one of the closest matches played and last years’ Novices winner Chris Salter, took the experienced Jonathan Barr to the wire, before finally missing out 19-21. On the first day of Competition the Mixed Rinks match was settled on the last end as Wendy Symonds, Steve Upton, Tony Hesketh-Field and Jenny Rich won 14-13 against Chris Salter, Pat Pittaway, Dave Gardiner and John Pittaway. At the same time the Mixed Triples match was also the subject of a tense finish and Umpire of the Day John Hendrick, was called to adjudicate on the tightest of measures. After much deliberation it went to Gail Chick, Barry Elms and Greg Sperring to give them a 15-14 victory over Chris Reeves, Carol Davey and Dennis Reeves. There are now four Pairs competitions and the winners in the Mixed Pairs were Chris Evans and Clive English against Velia Wood and Nick Cole, the Drawn Aussie Pairs was won by Jill Nobbs and John Pittaway against Brenda Burgess and Greg Sperring, the Ladies Pairs went to Gail Chick and Chris Evans over Olive Lutz and Velia Wood and finally the Gents Pairs was won by Gary Kent and Alan Phillips against Barry Elms and Greg Sperring. Our Club Captain Jenny Rich thanked all of the supporters for turning out and making the afternoon special and enjoying the now traditional “free” tapas and also thanked Jan and Alan Phillips for their organisation over the last six months. A special mention was given to our “newer” bowlers Steve Upton, Chris Salter and Peter Shaw for reaching the Championship Finals. See ALL the photo’s below:
