Falcons Report: FALCONS VS CALPE PASEO, played at JGBC on Monday 17 January 2022
A rather cool start to the match this morning, but it was more than made up for in the spirit of both squads. Falcons had the advantage of the home game and made the most of it. Sue Kents team started strong and kept up the consistency of play all the way through to the last end, winning by 9 shots. Mark Ivory’s team held onto their reputation and matched that by also taking a 9-shot win. Although Joe Schulein’s team started on the backfoot, it was even pegging by the 5th end with his team going into a comfortable lead until a nail-biting 13th end which again showed a drawn score – thankfully they didn’t let it ‘ruffle their feathers’ and the result went our way. Trevor Neal’s team takes the prize today for keeping composure despite some ‘argy-bargy’ and finishing with an impressive 12-point advantage. So, at the end, a very satisfactory 10/0 to Falcons with a 36-point win. (Mark Ivory was overheard offering his captain money for a ‘favourable mention’ in the report, so guess that is job done! 🙂
Falcons Report: FALCONS VS BBC BULLS, played at BBC on Monday 10 January 2022
On the first league match of 2022, a glorious sunny day awaited our Falcons squad at BBC. A tough challenge was expected and after 9 ends, both squads had 2 teams leading – it was at this 9th end that Mark Ivory’s team gained 6 shots in which their opposition were never able to re-coup, winning by a well-deserved 11 points. However, trumping that was Trevor Neale’s team who never let their opposition get a look in and won their game by 15 shots, 9 of those in the last four ends! Sue Kent’s team played a steady, (albeit tight) game with 14 out of the 18 ends showing no more than 3 points between the two teams scores but keeping their cool they went onto finish with a brilliant win. Also, worthy of a mention is Brian Taylor’s team, who, although unfortunately couldn’t ‘wave the flag’ today, can hold their heads up high after winning 11 out of their 18 ends. Final score 8/2 to Falcons. A satisfying win.
Falcons Report: FALCONS VS EL CID SWORDS, played at EL CID on Monday 6 December 2021
A rather chilly morning, but with a very warm welcome from the El Cid Swords. To say the morning bowling was ‘nip-and-tuck’ would be an understatement! Apart from Joe Schulein’s team who more or less held the lead from the start, the other matches were too close to call ……. on the 9th end the Falcons were only 2 shots down over the whole 4 games! Sue Kent’s team was 13/13 going into the 18th end, Brian Taylors team finished with only one point in it, and worthy of a mention is David Gardiner’s team who came back from a 7-point deficit on the 10th end, to claim victory with a 17/12 win – perseverance pays. Great bowling from all participants today, in-particular some spectacular shots from skips on ‘both sides of the camp’. Hard fought, well-earned 6/4 win.
Falcons Report: FALCONS VS EAGLES, played at JGBC on Monday 29 November 2021
A cloudless morning greeted both teams and all were in high spirits. As play got underway it was evident that the Falcons were going to have their work cut out for them, with two of our teams down by 8-10 points, after only 5 ends and Trevor Neale’s team holding their own. Encouragingly, Mark Ivory’s team was up by 8 at the same point. The trend continued over-all until around the 10th end, when the ‘tide began to turn’, and some ground was gained. Trevor’s team drew with both sides winning 9 ends each, John Pittaway’s team only conceding by 3 points, (despite being down 11, halfway) and Joe Schulein’s team winning the last 6 of 7 ends …. unfortunately, none of this was enough to bring home a win. It has to be said, although Mark’s back injury from the 6th end compounded a somewhat disappointing result, it was a most enjoyable morning with our Challengers also finishing on a draw. Never has ‘a game of two halves’ been more evident!
Falcons Report: FALCONS VS BONALBA BOWLS CLUB, played at BONALBA on Monday 22 November 2021
A trip down country to the outskirts of Alicante found our Falcons team in the home of the Bonalba Bowls Club and on the receiving end of a very warm welcome. We knew it was always going to be a challenge as we faced a very experienced opposition on every rink, and on their own turf. But we took it on, as always, with friendly rivalry. We put forward some of our own more experienced teams, but the opposition got the better of us today. However, Mark Ivory’s team deserves a mention, as the only team that scored a point for the Falcons despite the fact that two of them (out of the three), had never played there before……. a continuous ‘tug-of war’ is the only way to describe that game – a tie was a fitting end. Also, a ‘shout-out’ to the Challengers who were facing a significant loss, but putting up a fight to the last wood, ended up only forfeiting the game by 2 points. On a positive note, the rain stayed away until the 18th end, Colin Olver won the raffle, and Joe didn’t need to tell a joke! 😊 😉 😉
Falcons Report: FALCONS VS CALPE BOWLS CLUB, played at JGBC on Monday 15 November 2021
It is now official; Falcons has made it to the top of the league. Although the other JGBC squads have a game in hand, it is fitting to acknowledge that this place in the league table is due to the commitment of the Falcon squad and some fantastic bowling. Most teams started well and kept it going. David Gardner’s team (of himself and the Pittaway’s), was described as “going rounds in a heavy-weight” with both teams giving away 3 or 4 some ends, but perseverance paid out. And although David Ings team could not produce the same result of the last few league matches, it was certainly nothing to do with the quality of their bowling, (more often than not holding 3 or 4 on the jack) …… the opposition skip had a good day. The Challengers Team also deserve a mention, although initially down for the first few ends, they finished with a substantial win in the vicinity of 30 to 13. All in all, a very successful and enjoyable day had by all with a 8 to 2 point win to Falcons ….. and not a drop of rain!
Falcons Report: FALCONS VS El CID SABRES, played at El Cid on Monday 8 November 2021
A slightly apprehensive Falcons squad arrived at El Cid’s club this morning, in great spirits and looking forward to giving the opposition ‘a game’. And it was most definitely a game we gave them! With four scoring triple teams and a rinks friendly, there was some very good bowling amongst experienced players, from both sides. David Gardiner’s team of John and Pat Pittaway lead the way and kept it up till the very last wood winning by a high margin, supported by the teams of David Ings and Mark Ivory also winning comfortably in the end. As always, El Cid were friendly hosts and that combined with the bright sunshine, competitive but relaxed atmosphere resulted in an enjoyable morning. Rounded off by a superb result of 8/2 to Falcons. Well done to all.
Falcons Report: FALCONS VS JGBC HAWKS, played at JGBC on Monday 1 November 2021
With four scoring teams, and challengers and friendly teams, JGBC was awash with club colours on Monday morning and competitive tension was in the air. Before the start of the game, Steve Upton’s final words to his Hawks squad was “not to be complacent” and our Falcons team took those words on board as well and everyone made a game of it.
It was fairly even pegging in the first few ends but by the end of the 17th end all Falcons teams were winning …….. it all came down to the 18th end! And in some cases, the very last wood! The Falcons team of Sue and Gary Kent and Chris Schulein were two up playing the last end and with one wood to go from the Hawks who were holding two to bring it to a draw. With everyone watching and holding their breath the opposition skip came in with a shot on the jack, bringing their hold to 3 and taking the match by 1 shot. On the next rink was all excitement as Joe Schulein’s team of Trevor Neale and Betty P were up 3 shots on the 18th end (after a close fought battle), and the opposition were holding 4. Joe’s last wood came in to take down their hold to 2, but there was still one ominous wood from their skip to play ….. and play it did …… unfortunately taking Joe’s wood out, moving the jack to finish with a 7 thus taking the game.
With a 6/4 win to the Falcons, and very comfortable wins for our Challengers and Friendly’s it was a most successful morning, and it was looking like it could have been even more successful if it wasn’t for the last wood. As they say folks, ‘the show is not over till the fat lady sings’. Looking forward to round 2.
Falcons Report: FALCONS VS BBC BEARS, played at BBC on Monday 25 October 2021
We might all end up with a stick of rock from our holiday captain on his return!
Scribe for this week only, John Pittaway.
Final Result was 8/2 to JGBC Falcons
Falcons Report: FALCONS VS CALPE PASEO, played at Calpe Paseo on Monday 11 October 2021
Four of our Jávea scoring teams travelled to Calpe Paseo Bowling Club, some for the very first time. Among stunning beach location and inquisitive on-lookers from surrounding cafes, the game was played with great spirit and a close finish, with only a three point difference over the four games!
Unfortunately for Jávea that point difference wasn’t in our favour. The team of David Ings with John and Pat Pittaway made a brilliant comeback from over 10 points down at the 11th end, to a nail-biting 17/17 on the 18th end! It didn’t go their way in the 18th end but a commendable effort never-the-less. Sue Kent’s team with Chris Schulein and Gary Kent got off to a lead which was fiercely challenged by an experienced Calpe team and the measures and chalk were out in force!
Joe Schulien’s team with Roy Lees and Jean Gullidge, fought their way to win after a lot of ‘toing and froing’ ending up taking it by two points. Mark Ivory’s team with Colin Olver and Iris Lees commanded their game from the very start (despite letting the opposition have a little look-in halfway through) and certainly deserve a mention for holding their own and a superb finish.
Final Result was 6/4 to Calpe
