Iberian 25th Anniversary Bowls

What better way to celebrate the 25 th anniversary of
the Iberian Open at Javea Green, than a splendid
afternoon of bowls in glorious sunshine.
The Finals afternoon kicked off with the Rinks and
the Aussie Pairs matches. In the Rinks match, the
team of Dee & Keith Hamilton and Linda & Jeff
Richards got off to a flier by picking up 5 shots on
the first end and only came under serious threat
when Sheila Fairburn, Neville Allen, Joyce & Ernie
Pope got back to 9-11. From then on it was plain
sailing as Jeff’s team won all but one of the
remaining ends.
The Aussie Pairs was contested by 2 teams from El
Cid and it was Ian Blight and Jimmy Paveling who
got off to a good start and only some excellent
bowling from Hazel Brown and Yvonne Briden
prevented them from establishing a big lead. As the
game went on, there was never more than 2 or 3
shots between them and Ian and Jimmy maintained
the lead throughout the match until the very last
end, then the ladies struck and picked up 2 shots to
win 14-13, a thrilling end for the many spectators!
The Ladies Singles saw the very experienced Mary
Cockell, BBC, play against the less experienced Pat
Williams from El Cid. Unfortunately the match

followed the anticipated route and Pat was unable to
keep up with her much senior opponent. Both ladies
should be proud of their performances throughout
the competition.
The Gents Singles saw Richard Warrilow, El Cid,
playing against Trevor Neale, Javea Green, and they
produced a splendid match. After 20 ends the
scores were tied at 16-16 and no-one knew which
way this game would swing at the death. It was
Trevor who stepped forwards and played some
excellent bowls to win the next 3 ends and record a
famous 21-16 win. Trevor last won the Gents Singles
in 2013, so it was a welcome return to the top of the
podium!
At the Presentation our sponsors, Teletec,
Scottsdale Overseas, Bindley Properties,
Beniconnect, Prudential and Ocean View Est were
thanked for their support. Our President, Joe
Schulein, also thanked Dee Hamilton for organising
another fantastic competition, the spectators for
coming along to create a great atmosphere and the
competitors from BBC and El Cid for entering and
doing so well! Our photo shows the Ladies & Gents
Singles Champions Mary Cockell and Trevor Neale.
